LeST uses "grades" rather than child age

Unlike many Motif tests, the LeST is normed with "grade" at school. The norms are aligned with how long the child has been taught letter-sound-rules, based on standard grade naming. The data for the norms were collected towards the end of the year (not the beginning) and so, for example, if you are wanting to test a kid as soon as they come into K (before they were taught GPCs), their normed score which is based on kids tested at the end of the year (and hence had been taught GPCS for, say, 6 months) is going to be lower than a test run at the end of the year of learning.

Since instruction starts at different ages in different states, our guide is as follows:

If the child is in their first year of instruction (schooling), select Kindergarten.

For second year of instruction, select year 1.

For third year of instruction, select year 2.

For fourth year of instruction, select year 3.

If the child has been held back, select the grade that matches what they are being taught, as opposed to their age.
